Melbourne Dockland Sailing School Crew Page

What does it take?

Sailing Crew spots aren't always easy to find. Mostly it's experience and commitment. Unless you know an owner who is keen to teach you, it is really is difficult to place anyone who is just starting out in sailing.

Melbourne Dockland Sailing School and Hobson's Bay Yacht Club can certainly help those who have never sailed get the necessary experience to get a start. The aim of this page is to find an experienced sailing crew to race on a regular basis.

Looking for a place in a sailing crew at a Yacht Club?

We are looking for two or three experienced crew members who have sailed regularly on large trailer sailers, sports boats or keel boats.

Ultimately our boat will race every weekend in club and passage races from Hobson's Bay Yacht Club on Port Phillip Bay , including Geelong Week and in the Wednesday's Twilight series.

We are looking to form a sailing team around the following sailing crew positions - Genoa  / head sail trimmer, main sail trimmer and fore deck crew member.

Wanting to learn the Basics of Crewing?

Our sailing lessons are based around half day / 4 hour sessions.
Participants can then choose sessions that fit around budget and time restraints. Our fee for a standard 4 hour session is $95.00 per participant. We have learned that half day sessions are best, participants don't get overloaded with information, or worn-out from being onboard a yacht all day.

The 'Day Sailor' is a less expensive yacht because it doesn't feature all the extras that go with an overnight cruising yacht. Therefore we don't need as many participants to cover the costs. With smaller class sizes, 2 to 3 maximum, every participant has a task to do / learn.

Participants start with an Introduction to Sailing, if they like the experience and want to go to the next step, we offer Basic Level 1 and followed by Basic Level 2. This is the basis for recreational sailing where participants are able to help with sailing a yacht and are certainly 'on the road' to independently sailing a yacht.

The next level involves training for social Yacht Club racing.

We operate all year wind and weather conditions depending. Our sailing lessons are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays. During daylight savings we conduct morning sessions starting at 09:00 am and afternoon sessions starting at 2:00 pm. Outside Daylight savings, we start 1 hour earlier
